Mountaineering

The surrounding mountains of the Karwendel, the Wetterstein, the Zugspitze and the Soiern offer endless possibilities for mountain climbing in Mittenwald: directly from Sonnenbichl you can do easy hikes for example to the Vereinsalm or Eppzirler Alm; rather demanding climbs to the Mittenwald hut, the Brunnstein hut or the Karwendel cable railway station; tours for hikers who are free from giddiness are for example over the Soiern mountain; via ferratas for the brave (Mittenwalder via ferrata, Heinrich-Noe-via ferrata) and climbing routes for experts in all levels of difficulty.
We can only offer a glimpse of the infinite number of possible tours:

Brunnstein hut

A climb to the Brunnstein hut is amazing the whole season. From Sonnenbichl you either go through the Heuwiesen until the climb starts to the hut on the left (about 2 to 2 ½ hours). Or you choose the slightly longer route on the Leitersteig (ladder climbing) through the forest along the slope of Karwendel. Do not worry - the ladder, after which the trail was named, has been replaced by a bridge (approx. 3 hours). Frederico, the donkey, or Moni, the goat, may cross your way. After a snack at the hut with a magnificent panorama view you can climb up, past the Tiroler Hut to Brunnsteinspitze (again approx. 2 ½ to 3 hours). Or you can take also the Heinrich Noe-via ferrata, where you reach the Karwendel cable railway station (after 3 hours), which will bring you after your mountain workout comfortably back to the valley.

Highland hut

A nice day trip with a total of about 5 hours walking brings you to the Hochlandhütte. You start directly from the hotel Sonnenbichl on Dammkarstraße or Ochsenboden. Before reaching the Dammkarhütte you turn according to the signs. From the Hochlandhütte you can enjoy a rewarding view of the Zugspitze and the Ester Mountains before you descend to the valley again.
You can extend your walk by a detour over the Wörnersattel (mountain saddle) to the Kriner-Kofler-hut or from here to the Predigtstuhl (1920 m, easy), to Hochkarspitze (for climbers) or Wörner (unsecured).

The Dammkar-Hut and Dammkar

The Dammkarhütte is located at 1650 m above sea level. From Mittenwald, you start from the Ochsenboden or Dammkarstraße in about 2 hours through dense forests and larch slopes. A panoramic view over Mittenwald and the Isar valley up to the Zugspitze rewards hikers. From here you can hike to the Karwendel cable railway mountain station and take the cable car back down to the valley, or you climb the Viererspitze or the western Karwendelspitze.

The high alpine Dammkar is worth every season - even in winter for ski touring or the 7 km long free ride downhill!

Fereinalm and Kriner-Kofler-Hut

An easy walk leads to Fereinalm (pasture) lying lonely between the Wörnermassiv (Wörner massif) and Soiern on a plateau. You can reach the pasture within 2 – 2.5 hours along the Schotternstrasse or Jägersteig. From here you can climb to the Soiern Mountains or hike across the Wörnersattel to the Hochland-Hut. Or you just enjoy the beautiful, deserted landscape and hike after a cosy snack back to Mittenwald.
The tour can be shortened by a travelling with your car to the parking Isarhorn.

The Mittenwald hut

After approximately 2.5 hours from Mittenwald you reach the Mittenwald hut (1515 m, requires sure-footedness). After a typical Bavarian snack you feel strong and can continue to the western Karwendelspitze and the Karwendel cable railway mountain station with its via ferrata or the Lindenkopf (1795 m) to return to the hut. Or you stay at the nearby alpine climbing garden. Because of the sunset one night in the hut is worth it!

Soiernhaus with Soiernseen and Soiernspitze

Several long, very worthwhile day trips from Krün run through the territory of the Soiern.
An easy way leads you to the Fischbachalm and the Lakaienstieg or the Hundstall to Soiernhaus and the Soiernseen. From here you can hike to the Soiernspitze or Schöttelkarspitze. You can descent back to Fischbachalm or on the other side to Vereinsalm.
More challenging is the tour directly from Krün to the Schöttelkarspitze (2,050 m, requires sure-footedness!). Continue either via the Soiernspitze or directly down to the Soiernhaus with its lakes.

Walking in the Karwendel valleys

There are many scenic hikes along the Karwendeltäler (valleys) around Scharnitz. You can walk to Scharnitz across the Riedboden or drive to Scharnitz by car.

On the way to Karwendelhaus lies the Larchetalm. Unfortunately, she is no longer in service, but the easy tour is worth it (about 2 to 2.5 hours)! Always next to the Karwendelbach (stream) you walk through a beautiful landscape of pine trees and rocks until you reach the green alpine meadow. After a snack, which you brought with you, you walk back - you'll be amazed: On the way back, everything looks quite different and the way back seems to be shorter!

Through the Hinterautal you reach after a 2.5 hour tour the Pleisenhütte (1757 m) with a magnificent view. You can continue the ascent to the Pleisenspitze (2569 m) or after enjoying a cold beer hike back into the valley.

The Hinterautal leads upstream along the Isar River to its spring. A longer walk of about 4 hours will lead you to Kastenalm. This path is also very rewarding with bikes! At the end of the valley lies the Halleranger Alm where you can stay if you want to continue your trip the next day towards Innsbruck.

Eppzirler Alm and Oberbrunnalm

Do you want to walk along rugged rock formations, see rushing mountain streams and green pastures? Then go for the easy hike to Eppzirler Alm. You park your car in Gießenbach and walk always near the stream along the rugged rocks which finally end in a wide alpine pasture. With a little luck you see chamois in the rocks. After nearly two hours you reach the pasture.
You can also start in Gießenbach an easy tour to the Oberbrunnalm. From there you can take the loop road to Scharnitz and back. The owner of the Oberbrunalm welcomes any visit!

The Gaistal at Leutasch

The one who likes it rationally may visit the Gaistal (valley) at Leutasch. There you find easy hikes, accompanied by the ringing bells of the cows, to the Hämmermoosalm or to the Gaistalalm. From Gaistal you can also walk to the Wangalm and the Wettersteinhütte (hut) or the hiking loop trail to the new Rotmoosalm (2030 m).

Climbing

Around Mittenwald climbers can choose between different climbing gardens at different difficulty level. The tours are usually already equipped with bolts.

You can have your first exercises at the high ropes course and climbing tower at the Isarhorn. The climbing garden Karwendel offers tours from stage III to VIII with predominant fissure climbing and some plates.
The Mittenwald climbing garden at the border is used by the Mittenwalder Mountain and climbing schools and is well secured. It has some easy climbs with the difficulties III and IV and an overhang with difficulty up to VII.
The climbing garden Marmorbruch offers ten different climbs with the difficulties from III to VII.
